WINNIE F, WORM FARMER

Children's author, Carol Brendler, visited Riverwood! It was a great way to spotlight literacy in our school. Thank you to the PTO for coordinating her visit and the purchase of autographed hardcover books for each classroom. Her book is titled Winnie Finn, Worm Farmer. Her presentation has inspired our students to write and raise worms as a hobby.

POSITIVE BEHAVIOR INTERVENTION AND SUPPORTS KICK OFF!

PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports) is based on principles of applied behavior analysis and the prevention approach and values of positive behavior support. PBIS is an evidence-based practice that supports the academic and social behavioral outcomes for all students. At Riverwood, we created four school-wide expectations across the school. The acronym to help us remember our expectations is PAWS. This stands for Positive Attitude, Act Respectfully, Work Responsibly and Stay Safe. To learn and practice these expectations, posters were placed around the school stating the Rascal Rules. On January 6th, the students rotated through each setting learning and discussing the expectations. An important aspect of teaching and re-teaching is reinforcement. To reinforce the students for following the rules in school, they have the opportunity to earn a PAW. This is a raccoon paw print that enters them into a drawing for prizes. Another exciting moment at the Rascal Rally was the announcement of our school's new mascot. The PTO graciously helped to purchase Rocky Raccoon.

Character Counts!

6CharacterPillars

The McHenry Area CHARACTER COUNTS! Coalition was formed to establish an environment where all individuals personally embrace the principle that character does count, at all times and in all places. District 15 school embrace these character pillars, and this month we are focussing on...

CITIZENSHIP!
To do your share to make your school and community better, to cooperate, to stay informed, to vote, to be a good neighbor, to obey laws and rules, to respect authority, and to protect the environment.

Paper Retriever Recycling

Riverwood will be participating in the Paper Retriever Recycling program to help raise money for our school. This program is an easy way for you to recycle and help your child's school. Our yellow and green paper bin is located in the back of the school. This bin only accepts: newspapers, magazines, shopping catalogues, office and school paper, paperback books, mail, spiral notebooks, hard covered books with the covers removed and shredded paper in a plastic bag. Your continued support is greatly appreciated!
