Nurse Notes

  • Mobile Dentist will be visiting Riverwood on April 16th and 17th, 2012. Application forms were sent home and need to be returned no later than March 16th. Extra copies are available in the office.
  • The Health Office recommends that socks and shoes be worn by all students for outdoor play. We are concerned for the safety of your children's feet. Open-toed sandals and flip flops are not the safest footwear while outside on the playground. Please send socks and gym shoes for recess time. Also, please have students keep an extra set of clothes in their locker for puddles, mud and spills.
  • The end of the year is fast approaching, those who have med's in the Health Office will be receiving letters in the mail regarding picking up your medication and making arrangements for next year.
  • The McHenry County Health Department has identified an increase in cases of Bordetella Pertussis (whooping cough). Pertussis is an acute infectious disease caused by bacteria. The first symptoms are like those of a common cold--a runny nose, sneezing, low grade fever, and a mild cough. After a week or two, the cough progresses to a "whoop" like cough. Pertussis is spread when an individual coughs or sneezes into the air, and someone else breathes it into their lungs. Pertussis can only be diagnosed by a physician performing a nasal swab of the back of the nose. Results usually take about 5 days. Students MUST stay home during those 5 days while treated with antibiotics. If your student is showing any signs of Pertussis, please keep them home and call your physician. With the start of the 2012-13 school year, the State of Illinois will require this vaccine for entrance into 6th grade. Encourage hand washing and respiratory etiquette, which includes covering your cough with a tissue, coughing into your elbow if no tissue is available, along with proper disposal of tissues.
