Top Things Parents Can Teach At Home To Help Their Child Be Successful In 4th Grade

Help your child be successful in fourth grade by making sure they can do the the items listed below.

  • Count to 100 by 1, 2, 5 and 10.
  • Identify the minute and hour hands on a clock.  (You can teach them hour hand is shorter, just like the word hour is shorter than minute.)
  • Write their name and address as if it were on an envelope.  (Do they know what state they live in?)
  • Know the difference between long (like A in ape) and short (like a in apple) vowel sounds.
  • Identify a penny, nickel, dime, quarter and half dollar and be able to tell how many cents each coin is worth.
  • Say the days of the week and months of the year in order.
  • Know our state, its capital city, as well as their entire home address including spelling.
  • Go over their assignment notebook with them every night.
  • Know how to add (including carrying numbers), subtract (including borrowing), as well as multiplication facts through 12's.
  • Be able to identify basic parts of speech such as nouns, verbs, and adjectives.
  • Begin all sentences with a capital letter.
  • End all sentences with some form of punctuation such as a period, question mark, or exclamation point.
  • Practice cursive handwriting whenever possible.
