WIDA PODER: Spanish Language Assessment System

The WIDA PODER Summative Assessment and the WIDA PODER Screener are aligned to the WIDA Spanish Language Development (SLD) Standards. The WIDA PODER Screener and Summative Assessments are currently available for Kindergarten and the WIDA PODER Screener for Grade 1 will be available in early Fall 2014. The WIDA PODER Summative Assessment for Grade 1 and the WIDA PODER Screener and Summative Assessments for Grade 2 will be available in March 2015.

As flexible, on-demand language proficiency assessments, the two assessments can be administered at any time during the school year, depending on the needs of the district, school, teacher, or student. However, WIDA recommends that each assessment only be administered once within the same school year. Both assessments feature a technology component to aid in the administration and scoring of the assessment.
Both assessments can be used for these purposes:

• Ascertain academic Spanish language proficiency
  
  
• Provide evidence of what students know and can do with academic Spanish language
  
  
• Inform instruction and assessment for students
  
  
• Serve as a tool for communication with parents
  
  
• Inform a profile of a student's development as an emergent bilingual
  
  
• Provide appropriate data to inform placement into a Spanish language bilingual program
  
  
• Inform programmatic improvements
